Makita HSS-R metal drill bits with a straight shank, in a range of diameters. The everyday bit for drilling steel, aluminium and other metals in any keyed or keyless chuck.
HSS-R, HSS-G and TiN
HSS-R bits are rolled rather than ground. They cost less than ground HSS-G bits and work perfectly well in mild steel and aluminium, which is most of what anyone actually drills. For stainless, hardened steel or repeated production work, a ground or coated bit will hold its edge considerably longer and is worth the extra.
Drilling metal properly
- Slow speed, firm pressure. Nearly every ruined bit was run too fast. Larger diameters need slower speeds, not faster.
- Centre-punch first. A bit that wanders at the start never recovers the position.
- Use cutting fluid on anything thicker than sheet. It is the cheapest way to make bits last.
- Step up for larger holes. Drill a pilot, then open out.
- If the bit stops producing swarf, stop. It is rubbing, not cutting, and the heat is destroying the tip.
Sizes and the bit type guide are in the tables below.
