A rotary hammer drives the bit with a piston mechanism, so it drills concrete and masonry much faster than a standard hammer drill. Many models offer a hammer-only mode for chiselling. Demolition hammers and breakers are heavier tools built for breaking concrete, removing tiles and chasing. SDS-plus is the common fitting for holes up to around 30mm, while SDS-max is the heavier standard for large holes and breaking.
How to Choose the Right Hammer
- SDS-plus or SDS-max – the shanks are not interchangeable, so match the fitting to the bits and chisels you need.
- Impact energy – measured in joules; higher figures suit heavier drilling and breaking.
- Modes – 3-mode and 4-mode tools add hammer-only and chisel positioning.
- Corded or cordless – cordless is convenient for ceilings and site mobility, while corded suits long continuous work.
- Vibration and dust control – anti-vibration handles and dust extraction attachments help with extended use.
