Coated abrasives are sheets, discs and belts with abrasive grit bonded onto a flexible backing. The grit number tells you how coarse they are, with low numbers removing material quickly and high numbers leaving a fine finish. Polishing pads, bonnets and backing pads complete the range for buffing and surface finishing.
How to Choose the Right Sanding Abrasive
- Grit – start with a coarse grit for stripping or levelling, then move through finer grits for a smooth finish.
- Format – choose discs for orbital sanders and grinders, belts for belt sanders, sheets for hand or sheet sanders, and sponges for contours.
- Size and holes – the diameter and hole pattern must match your sander and backing pad.
- Material – wood, paint, drywall and metal each suit a different abrasive and grit range.
- Backing – hook-and-loop backing makes disc changes quick, while pads and bonnets suit polishing work.
