What F type nails are
F type is the common straight brad, used in finish and trim nailers. The head is small enough to sink below the surface and disappear under filler, which is the whole point — these are for work that will be seen.
Choosing a length
The working rule is that the nail should go about two thirds of its length into the base material. So for 12mm trim onto a timber frame, something in the F30 to F35 range. Too short and it will not hold; too long and the point can come through the back of the piece, or deflect and burst out of the face.
Where they are used
- Skirting, architrave and beading
- Furniture and cabinet assembly
- Sofa and upholstery frames
- Decorative and trim work in renovation
Worth knowing
- Check the nailer takes F type and covers the length you want. Brad nailers are usually rated for a range, such as 10–50mm.
- Iron nails will rust if they get damp. For anything in a bathroom, kitchen splashback or outdoors, use a stainless or galvanised nail instead.
- Keep boxes dry in storage — surface rust makes strips jam in the magazine.
