Makita scaling chisels for SDS-Plus rotary hammers, available in several widths and lengths. SDS-Plus shank, so they fit any SDS-Plus hammer set to hammer-only mode — Makita or otherwise.
What a scaling chisel does
A scaling chisel has a wide, flat blade designed to work along a surface rather than bite into it. That makes it the tool for stripping tile, lifting screed and render, cleaning concrete faces and removing plaster, where a pointed bull point would simply punch holes.
Choosing the right chisel
- Bull point — pointed, for breaking into concrete and starting demolition.
- Flat chisel — narrow blade, for cutting channels and chases.
- Scaling chisel — wide blade, for stripping surfaces and lifting tile.
- Wider is not always better. A wide blade spreads the hammer energy, so a heavy chisel on a light hammer will barely work.
Work at a shallow angle and let the hammer do the breaking. Levering on the chisel will bend or snap it.
Available sizes are shown in the table below, with a guide to the chisel types.
