SDS-Max, not SDS-Plus

This is the larger shank. SDS-Max tools are the heavy breakers used for slab, structural concrete and serious demolition; SDS-Plus is the lighter fitting on most 18V and small corded hammers. The two do not interchange, and it is the single most common ordering mistake on chisels. Check the shank on your hammer before buying.

What a cold chisel does

A cold chisel has a narrow, straight cutting edge for cutting into concrete, masonry and brick along a line — chasing channels, cutting openings, trimming back slab edges and breaking out around a penetration. Where a bull point punches a hole, a cold chisel works a cut.

Using it well

• Work along a line in overlapping bites rather than attacking one spot.
• Keep the chisel close to perpendicular and let the hammer deliver the energy — leaning on the tool does nothing but tire you out.
• Never lever with the chisel. That is how they bend and snap.
• Grease the shank before fitting. A dry shank wears the tool holder as well as the chisel.
