An impact wrench uses a hammering mechanism to deliver high torque, measured in newton metres, through square-drive sockets. It is the tool for loosening seized fasteners and tightening large nuts and bolts. A cordless ratchet wrench gives lower torque but has a slim head that reaches into tight spaces where a full-size impact wrench will not fit.
How to Choose the Right Wrench
- Drive size – 3/8" suits light automotive and general work, 1/2" is the common all-rounder, and 3/4" or 1" is for structural and industrial bolting.
- Torque – compare fastening and breakaway torque against the largest bolt you expect to handle.
- Form factor – compact, mid-torque, D-handle and right-angle designs each suit different access conditions.
- Battery platform – match the tool to batteries you already own to buy a bare unit.
- Sockets – always use impact-rated sockets with impact wrenches.
