Milwaukee M18 vs M12 in Singapore: Which Battery Platform Should You Buy?
If you are buying into Milwaukee for the first time, the first decision is not which drill to get. It is which battery platform you are committing to, because every tool you buy afterwards is tied to it.
Milwaukee runs two main cordless platforms in Singapore: M12 and M18. Here is how to choose, and why the answer for most trades is "both, eventually".
The short answer
M18 is the main platform. It covers drills, grinders, saws, impact wrenches, hydraulic tools and almost everything heavy. If you are only picking one, pick M18.
M12 is the subcompact platform. Smaller, lighter, and built for work in tight spaces or overhead where an M18 tool is simply too bulky to hold all day. It complements M18 rather than replacing it.
M18: the one that does the work
M18 is where the serious power is. Percussion drills, angle grinders, circular saws, high-torque impact wrenches, and the FORCE LOGIC hydraulic range for electricians all run on it.
Battery choice within M18 matters more than people expect:
- M18 B2 2.0Ah — light, for drivers and lights where runtime is not critical.
- M18 HB3 High Output 3.0Ah — the sensible everyday battery.
- M18B5 5.0Ah — the standard workhorse pack.
- M18 FB8 FORGE 8.0Ah and M18 FB12 FORGE 12.0Ah — the FORGE packs, for grinders, saws and anything that draws hard and sustained current.
A small battery on a demanding tool is the most common mistake we see. The tool will run, but it will sag under load and the pack will run hot. If you are buying a grinder or a saw, budget for a bigger pack at the same time.
M12: the one you actually carry
M12 is 12V and subcompact. The tools are short, light, and fit where your hand barely fits — inside a riser, above a ceiling, under a dashboard.
Typical M12 batteries:
- M12 HB2.5 High Output 2.5Ah — smallest and lightest.
- M12 B3 3.0Ah — the common all-rounder.
- M12 HB5 High Output 5.0Ah and M12B6 6.0Ah — when you want M12 size with real runtime.
Where M12 earns its place: air conditioning and refrigeration work, auto workshops, panel and riser work, and anywhere you are working one-handed above shoulder height. The weight difference stops mattering after ten minutes and starts mattering after two hours.
The part that makes running both easy
You do not need two sets of chargers. Milwaukee makes dual-platform chargers that take M12 and M18 packs on the same unit:
- M12-18C — the basic dual charger.
- M12-18FC Rapid Charger — faster, the one most people should buy.
- M12-18SC Super Charger — fastest single-bay option.
If you are running a crew on M18 only, multi-bay units make more sense: the M18 DFC dual bay, the M18 DBSC dual bay super charger, or the M18 PC6 PACKOUT 6-bay for a van or a site office.
So which do you start with?
General construction, renovation, M&E: start M18. Add M12 later for the tight-access jobs.
Air conditioning, refrigeration, automotive: M12 is often the better first buy, because most of your day is spent in confined spaces. Add M18 for the heavy cutting and drilling.
Electrical and utility: M18, without question — the FORCE LOGIC crimpers, cutters and knockout tools only exist on M18.
Whichever you start with, buy the batteries and charger as a deliberate decision rather than taking whatever comes in the kit. The packs outlast the tools.
