DEWALT has accumulated a lot of badges: 18V, 20V MAX, XR, ATOMIC, FlexVolt, PowerStack. Customers come in asking which is better, and the honest answer is that the question does not quite work — some of these describe the battery, some describe the motor, and some are just marketing from different decades sitting side by side on the same shelf.

Here is what each one actually means, and what to look at instead.

18V and 20V MAX are the same thing

This is the one that causes the most confusion, so it is worth being blunt: a 20V MAX battery is not more powerful than an 18V battery. They are the same battery.

Both use five lithium-ion cells. Freshly charged, a voltmeter across the pack reads about 20V — that is the maximum, hence "20V MAX". The moment you pull current, it settles to its nominal 18V, which is the figure the rest of the industry quotes. Different number, identical pack.

DEWALT markets it as 20V MAX in North America and 18V in Europe and Asia. In Singapore you will see both, which is why most of our current stock is simply labelled 18V/20V MAX — for example the DCD800N Drill Driver. Nothing is being hidden from you; it is one platform with two names.

XR means two different things

XR stands for eXtreme Runtime (you will also see it written as extended runtime), and where it is printed changes what it is telling you.

On a battery, XR means a higher-capacity pack — a bigger fuel tank. The DCB183 2.0Ah, DCB182 4.0Ah and DCB184 5.0Ah are all XR packs, and the number before the Ah is the only part that tells you how long you will run.

On a tool, XR means the motor is brushless. Brushless motors convert more of the battery's charge into work and less into heat, so you get more done per charge and there are no brushes to wear out and replace. The DCD996NT High Torque Hammer Drill Driver and the DCG416VSN Angle Grinder are both XR tools.

The catch worth knowing in 2026: brushless is now standard across almost the whole professional range, so XR has stopped being a useful way to tell tools apart. Most of what we stock is brushless whether or not the badge says XR.

ATOMIC means small

ATOMIC is DEWALT's compact sub-line. Same 18V/20V MAX batteries, same brushless motors, but shorter and lighter bodies built for tight spaces, overhead work and long periods of holding the tool up.

It is not a lower-quality line and it is not a DIY line — it is a size. The DCF922D2 1/2" Impact Wrench and the DCF911N Hog Ring Impact Wrench are both ATOMIC, and both are serious tools. There is even an ATOMIC stick vacuum.

The trade-off is real though. A compact tool has less mass to absorb recoil and a smaller motor, so on sustained heavy work a full-size tool will be faster and less tiring despite weighing more. Buy ATOMIC because of where you work, not because lighter sounds better.

FlexVolt and FlexVolt Advantage

FlexVolt batteries switch between 18V/20V MAX and 54V/60V depending on the tool they are fitted to, which is how DEWALT runs mains-class equipment off the same system.

FlexVolt Advantage is a different and more useful idea for most people: an 18V tool that recognises a FlexVolt battery and draws more current from it to deliver extra performance, while still working normally on a standard pack. The DCD999N High Torque Hammer Drill Driver is the one to look at here.

If you do not already own FlexVolt batteries, this is not a reason to buy in. If you do, it is free performance you already paid for.

PowerStack is the one that actually changed something

Of all the badges on this page, PowerStack is the only recent one that represents a genuine engineering difference rather than a naming convention.

Standard batteries use cylindrical cells with air gaps between them. PowerStack uses stacked pouch cells, which pack more material into the same volume and have lower internal resistance. In practice that means a pack that is smaller and lighter, runs cooler, and delivers more current — so the tool feels stronger, not just longer-lasting.

The DCBP034 1.7Ah is remarkable for its size: it is physically smaller than a 2.0Ah XR pack and outperforms it on demanding tools. The DCBP520 5.0Ah is the full-size version.

Several kits now ship with them, including the DCD805E1T Hammer Drill Driver set and the DCD1007H1T at 169Nm. The DCD806S1M1T kit is a sensible way in: it comes with a 3.5Ah PowerStack and a 4.0Ah XR, so you get the light pack for overhead work and the big one for the bench.

So what should you actually look at?

Ignore the badge and check three things.

Is it brushless? On the professional range the answer is almost always yes now, and if it is not, there should be a price reason.

What is the torque figure? This is the number that tells you what the tool will do. 65Nm, 90Nm, 169Nm, 282Nm — these are real differences you will feel. XR versus ATOMIC is not.

Which batteries are in the kit? On most purchases the batteries are a large share of what you are paying for, and a cheap-looking kit with two 2.0Ah packs is often worse value than a dearer one with a 4.0Ah and a PowerStack.

Where we would point you

Tight spaces and overhead work all day: the 12V XR combo kit. People overlook the 12V line and it is the right answer more often than you would think, especially for electrical and cabinetry work.

Automotive and heavy fastening: the DCF900P2T high torque impact wrench.

And whatever you buy, get a decent charger — the DCB1104-B1 4A multi-voltage fast charger handles both 12V and 20V MAX packs and is genuinely faster than the one in the box.

Come and hold them

Weight and balance decide whether you still like a tool at 5pm, and no badge on the casing tells you that. Both showrooms have the range out.
