Makita MAKTRAK Explained: The New Modular Tool Storage System
MAKTRAK is Makita's new modular tool storage system, and it is now in stock at A.C.T. Hardware. If you have used stacking tool boxes before, the first thing to understand is that MAKTRAK is built around a different idea — and it is the one that actually matters on site.
The Problem Every Stacking System Has
You stack three boxes. The tool you need is in the bottom one. You unstack two boxes to open it, use the tool, then stack them back. Repeat eleven times a day.
Every modular system on the market has this problem, because the lid is on top and the next box sits on the lid.
What MAKTRAK Does Differently
MAKTRAK is horizontal. The boxes are wide rather than tall, the lids are dual-hinged and removable so they open from either side, and the design lets you open a box without handle interference or unstacking.
The Rolling Tool Chest is the base of the system and shows the thinking most clearly. It has a dual-direction top and front cleat mount, so it takes up to three stacks — on top and on the face — rather than one tower you have to dismantle. 81.9 litres, 113kg capacity, 9" wheels, and a rubberised Gecko Grip handle for loading in and out of a van. Around $610.
Other details that show it was designed by people who have carried tools:
- Glove-friendly latches — large enough to work with gloves on, which is most of the time.
- Metal-reinforced locking points and a hidden tracker slot for a Bluetooth tag.
- MOLLE panel dividers on the larger boxes.
- Impact-resistant copolymer throughout. The range is made in the United States.
The Range, Piece by Piece
Tool boxes
- P-91039 Medium Tool Box — 18.4L, 34kg capacity, deep and shallow trays for hand tools and small parts. The sensible starting box. Around $210.
- P-91017 Large Tool Box — the long horizontal one, 801mm wide, for tools that do not fit anything else. Dual-hinged lid, MOLLE divider, storage tray. Around $400.
- P-91023 Extra Large Extension Tool Box — 58.5L and 45kg, 401mm deep for oversized tools. Mounts horizontally or connects vertically to the Rolling Tool Chest. Around $280.
Organisers
- P-91067 Deep Compact Organiser — 5 removable bins, 127mm deep, clear lid. Two fit on a medium lid. Around $140.
- P-91045 Deep Medium Organiser — 11 bins, 18.1L, the one for fixings in volume. Just under $200.
- P-91051 Low-Profile Medium Organiser — 11 bins at only 85mm tall, with dividers included. For small parts where height is wasted space. Around $180.
All three organisers have clear lids and a ribbed interior that stops bins sliding, and the bins nest together when not in use.
Rolling units
Newest in the range, and the ones most people are asking about:
- MD00000002 Carry Tool Box with Wheels — 580 x 470 x 470mm, telescopic handle, removable top tray, adjustable dividers. Around $300.
- MD00000003 Carry Tool Drawer with Wheels — same footprint, but with a full-width slide-out drawer on metal rails. Reach your tools without opening a lid at all. Around $375.
- MD00000001 Tool Box 20L — IP65 rated against dust and water, 34kg, dual-hinged lid, folding handle, padlock hole and tracker slot. Around $110, and the cheapest way into the system.
Does MAKTRAK Connect to MakPac?
This is the first question every existing Makita owner asks, and we are not going to guess at the answer.
The two systems use different mechanisms — MakPac uses side-mounted interlocking clamps, MAKTRAK uses cleat mounts and metal-reinforced locking points — and Makita's published material does not state that they interlock with each other. So do not plan a mixed stack on the assumption that it works.
If you already run MakPac and want to know exactly what will and will not sit together, bring a case into either showroom and try it on the MAKTRAK boxes on the floor. That takes thirty seconds and settles it properly.
Where To Start
If you are buying into the system, the usual sensible order is:
- One box first. The Medium Tool Box if you carry hand tools, the Extra Large Extension if you carry bulky power tools.
- Then an organiser. Low-Profile for fixings and small parts, Deep for anything with length.
- The Rolling Tool Chest last, once you know how many boxes you actually run. It is the expensive piece, and it only earns its money when there is a stack to carry.
The thing worth knowing before you commit: you are buying into a system, not a box. The cost is not the first purchase, it is the fourth one. Handle them before you decide.
See It In Person
We have the MAKTRAK range on the floor at both showrooms, and you are welcome to open everything, stack it, and work out whether the horizontal layout suits how you actually work.
